Nietzsche....

This is actually old thinking. In Nietzsche's time, everybody was socially connected. Everybody knew what everybody else was doing, so there was immense social pressure. In today's society, at least in America, we have no clue what our neighbor is doing, so we actually are in desperate need of a cultural confirmation.
