Two centuries ago, by historians' rough estimates, most people alive were desperately poor. Today a much smaller share are, yet hundreds of millions still live on a few dollars a day. How did so many escape, and why did others not?
This course follows economists as they argue about that puzzle: geography against institutions, big aid plans against small experiments, South Korea and Botswana against countries that stalled. It ends with a question for each of us, posed by Peter Singer's drowning child, and with a reminder that poor people are the main authors of their own progress.
