Three hundred Spartans held the pass at Thermopylae, the story goes, and died to a man. In fact there were about seven thousand Greeks at the start, the Spartans had seven hundred Thespians fighting and dying beside them at the end, and two of the three hundred came home, one to be shamed and one to hang himself.

The real Sparta is stranger than the movie version. You will meet its two kings and its five all-powerful overseers, follow a Spartan boy from age seven through barracks and black broth, and look hard at the enslaved helots whose labor paid for it all. Then you will walk the hot gates day by day, follow Sparta to victory and sudden collapse, and see how its legend has been borrowed by philosophers, revolutionaries and dictators ever since.
