What a right is, the long road from natural law and Magna Carta to the revolutionary declarations and abolition, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the treaties, courts and organizations that protect rights today, the main philosophical justifications, the right to life and bodily security, the strongest critiques of human rights and the replies to them, and how rights work, and fail to work, in practice.

The aim is understanding, not persuasion: you should finish able to explain why human rights have become a shared language across much of the world, and to state fairly the serious objections that critics from many traditions have raised. No background needed.
