In 1789 the richest colony on Earth was a strip of mountains and sugar fields on the island of Hispaniola, worked by half a million enslaved people. Fifteen years later it was an independent nation led by former slaves, who had beaten the armies of Spain, Britain and Napoleon in turn. Then France sent warships and billed the new country for its own freedom.
This is the story of how the promise that all men are born free and equal was finally taken at its word. You will meet Toussaint Louverture, Dessalines and the rebels of 1791, weigh the hard choices and real crimes of a war fought to the end, and see how Haiti's victory reshaped the map of North America. You will also see why so many history books left it out, and what that silence says about whose freedom the world was ready to imagine.
