Sweden has a king who is not allowed to choose the prime minister. Iran holds real elections, then lets a council of clerics strike candidates off the ballot. Switzerland is run by seven people at once, and Mexico was governed by one party for seventy-one years while voting regularly the whole time. The labels on governments tell you surprisingly little about how they actually work.
This course gives you the tools to look underneath them. Start with Aristotle's six types and Weber's three kinds of authority, then work through monarchies, presidential and parliamentary democracies, federations, juntas, one-party states, totalitarian regimes and theocracies, each with its defenders' best case. You will finish able to classify almost any government on Earth, and you will know what the evidence says about which kinds protect people and which kinds endanger them.
