In 1989 a man who had once been sentenced to death in Texas walked out of prison, helped along by a film that restaged the murder he was convicted of over and over, each time the way a different witness remembered it. Movies can do that. They can also sell a dictator as a god, teach a nation to fear its neighbors, and make you cry over a stolen bicycle in a city you have never seen. Most of the time we feel all of it without noticing how it was done.

Here you will learn to notice. You will pick apart a shower scene shot by shot, watch a Paris magician vanish actors with a stopped camera, follow a Comanche raid through John Ford's eyes and then question them, and visit the film industries of Moscow, Rome, Tokyo, Mumbai and Lagos. You will weigh what counts as truth in a documentary, why Hollywood once banned interracial romance on screen, whose films were lost and whose were saved, and what changes when an algorithm picks tonight's movie. Afterward the screen should feel less like a window and more like a set of choices you can read, enjoy and argue with.
