In the Jack Hills of Western Australia, geologists have found grains of zircon smaller than a grain of sand that formed about 4.4 billion years ago, when the planet was young and its surface still raw. Each grain is a working clock. Learning to read clocks like these, and the layered rocks, ocean floors and mountain ranges around them, transformed how people understood their place in time: human history turned out to be a few seconds at the end of a very long day.

Earth science is the study of a planet that never sits still. Continents drift a few centimeters a year, rivers saw through mountains, and the same water circles from sea to sky to aquifer. You will learn how geologists date rocks, why some volcanoes pour while others explode, where the metals in your phone come from, and why the toll of an earthquake or cyclone depends as much on human choices as on the ground. Afterward, a road cut, a beach or a news report about a disaster should look less like scenery and more like a story you can read.
