Meditations #1

SEVERAL years have now elapsed since I first became aware that I had accepted, even from my youth, many false opinions for true, and that consequently what I afterward based on such principles was highly doubtful; and from that time I was convinced of the necessity of undertaking once in my life to rid myself of all the opinions I had adopted, and of commencing anew the work of building from the foundation, if I desired to establish a firm and abiding superstructure in the sciences.

I Dropped the Religious God By Choice

I want to make this clear, because religious people, for their own convenience leave a significant amount of details missing from the story of life. Here is a perfect example:

There is No Real Atheist, and No Real Theist

Every time I think about the implications of my Universal Humanism, I find support constantly. I understand people of the past, and present, and it becomes easy to see morality as it is, and as it should be. The relations between ideas do not become certain to an instant, but, you come to an understanding that they are not supposed to be. You take the step forward that allows you to see that metaphysical ideas grow out of duration, proportional comparison, and consequencialism.

Meditations #2

But, to this end, it will not be necessary for me to show that the whole of these are false--a point, perhaps, which I shall never reach; but as even now my reason convinces me that I ought not the less carefully to withhold belief from what is not entirely certain and indubitable, than from what is manifestly false, it will be sufficient to justify the rejection of the whole if I shall find in each some ground for doubt.

It's the Universe's Fault Also

When we travel on the road of philosophical inquiry, we become perplexed by situations that seem to us to be incalculable. Our limitations put us in situations which the right, true and correct path is not clear to us, and we are not able to see into the future to the ends which would help us know if we are right or wrong.

Meditations #3

All that I have, up to this moment, accepted as possessed of the highest truth and certainty, I received either from or through the senses. I observed, however, that these sometimes misled us; and it is the part of prudence not to place absolute confidence in that by which we have even once been deceived.

But it may be said, perhaps, that, although the senses occasionally mislead us respecting minute objects, and such as are so far removed from us as to be beyond the reach of close observation, there are yet many other of their informations (presentations), of the truth of which it is manifestly impossible to doubt; as for example, that I am in this place, seated by the fire, clothed in a winter dressing gown, that I hold in my hands this piece of paper, with other intimations of the same nature.

Militant Optimism is not a "Good" Idea

Seriously, I do not know how many times, and how many ways I will write and rewrite this essay to try to make the point clear. Somebody has to pay for you to be optimistic. People just do not understand the indirect consequences of their actions. As long as their optimism seems to keep them happy, that is as far as they see. They cannot understand when this optimism gathers in group-think to support the sacred gem, it demands indirectly a hardcore exclusion.

My Personal Motives and Development

There is many dimensions to these essays I am writing. There are a string of essays that must necessarily be written, and they are essays articulating my motives. Naturally I have been focused on what men "ought" to do, and actually I am articulating my own crystalline structure simultaneously. When I speak about the "ought" for men, I am speaking about myself also, as power is not above the law. What is it that I hope to achieve? And finally, realistically, what is it that I think will happen?
